Paving the Path to College Completion
Public Prep observes various traditions throughout the academic year that keep the goal of college completion on the minds of families, students, and staff in our community. Here are some highlights from this past year:
May 21-23 was College and Career Week at all Public Prep Schools this year. The schools were transformed with college pennants lining the hallways and teachers sporting their college t-shirts at school. Across all Public Prep schools, students conducted 92 interviews with professionals who described their college and career experiences to students. The week reaffirmed the goal of college completion for students like Jia, a first grader at Girls Prep LES Elementary School, who said, following an interview with a nurse practitioner, “I want to go to college so I can help people, too.”
Each year, Girls Prep scholars step on at least one college campus. Students visited several colleges this year, including NYU, Georgia Tech, Spelman College, Fordham University, University of Pennsylvania, and Columbia University. Ms. Song, a third grade teacher at Girls Prep LES Elementary School, took her class to her alma mater, Barnard College. On their visit the third graders had a Q&A session with current students, went on a student-led tour of the campus, and observed chemistry demos in a science lab. Girls Prep scholars joined Barnard students on the campus lawn for lunch at the end of the trip.
This year more than 40 Public Prep families enrolled their daughters in tax-free NY529 College Savings Accounts. Public Prep matches family contributions annually to encourage parents to save early, and to reiterate our confidence that each of our scholars will go to college.
"Girls Prep Bronx had a school-wide goal to improve our NY529 College Savings Account enrollment by 100%." said Caitlin Omeis, Assistant Director of Student and Family Affairs at Girls Prep Bronx, "We are proud to announce that we reached and surpassed that goal! Girls Prep Bronx is excited to see so many of our families are committed to our girls’ future plans for college and beyond!"
