Barclays Helps Students Prepare for their Future Careers
Girls Prep LES Middle School scholars benefited from two more events with Barclays that focused on fostering career-readiness skills in scholars.

Barclays Mentorship Series

For the fifth consecutive year, Girls Prep LES Middle School paired up with mentors at Barclays for a six week mentoring program.

Barclays employees traveled to Girls Prep LES Middle School to meet with their mentees after-school once a week for five weeks. Each week  they focused on a different aspect of 'self-talk.' The goal of the series was to change the way students think and talk to themselves to diminish self-doubt and improve their confidence.

The culminating session was held at Barclays. Students visited the trading floor, where many of their mentors work, and ate dinner with the entire group, giving mentors and mentees an opportunity to meet each other. Ashley Higgins, one of the coordinators of the Barclays Mentorship Series said, “I have loved participating and organizing the mentoring program with Girls Prep for the last few years. We consistently get great feedback and repeat volunteers. The mentors love getting to know the girls and exposing them to both Barclays and their educational and professional experiences. It was so fun exploring the topic of ‘self-talk’ with them.”

Girls Prep looks forward to continuing this invaluable program next spring.

High Tea with Amanda Jenkins

Girls Prep sixth graders enjoyed high tea and an etiquette class in the top floor dining room at Barclays with Amanda Jenkins, a life-long volunteer devoted to enhancing the benefits of education, and the wife of Barclays CEO Antony Jenkins. Students networked with Barclays employees, and learned how to properly eat and drink in a professional setting. Sharing tea and scones was a new experience for Esperanza, a Girls Prep LES Middle School scholar who said, “I thought that the butter that was put out with the scones was whipped cream, so I took a gigantic bite." She laughed and said she would not make that mistake again.

Following tea, students participated in a networking workshop focused on developing their personal brand. Students flourished in the workshop, and came out of their shells as they eloquently shared their personal strengths to Barclays employees. Reflecting on the networking portion of the event, Esperanza added, "I learned so much from my 'Barclays Buddies' and now I feel more comfortable speaking with adults."
