"It's my first day of school," said an excited Nahzier Reddick.

His mother, Tatyana Fields, was equally thrilled because she believes Nahzier's previous school didn't tap into his full potential. "When I got the call from Boys Prep, I was about to cry I was so happy," Fields said.

Nahzier is one of 144 boys, from kindergarten through first grade, to attend the school, which currently shares space with P.S. 107 on Seward Avenue. Boys Prep plans to eventually expand through fifth grade.

Peter Herzberg, the principal of Boys Prep, says the two schools have a good relationship, despite the charter school sharing space with the public school. "The principal of P.S. 107, Katherine Hamm, has been very welcoming, so it's been great," Herzberg said.

The school day at Boys Prep ends at 4:30 p.m., allowing for a longer day filled with more opportunities to learn.

Boys Prep was one of the new charter schools in limbo before Mayor Bill de Blasio and Gov. Andrew Cuomo came to a budget agreement earlier this year.
