Girls Prep Outperforms District Average in State Tests! [8/22/16]

New York recently released the results of the 2015-16 state assessments. We are pleased and excited to announce that Girls Prep Lower East Side has outperformed the district 1 average in both English Language Arts (ELA) and Math state tests!  Academically, we are on the move!

In our continued quest to develop the next generation of female engineers, scientists and mathematicians, 99% of our 4th grade scholars passed the 2016 NY state science exam. Girls Prep is one of the only public schools to offer science class (beginning in Kindergarten) for 45 minutes, five days a week, taught by dedicated science teachers.

Girls Prep Lower East Side's overall growth in literacy outpaced the growth in the district, city and state! For the ELA state test, Girls Prep scores increased by 17% from 2015 to 2016.  Girls Prep is improving at a significantly faster rate than the city and state average.

Students of Color at Girls Prep Lower East Side are demonstrating levels of proficiency at nearly double the rate of their Black and Hispanic peers in New York City Schools in both ELA and Math.  See the graph above for New York City Students of Color Proficiency comparisons.

The journey to college completion and preparedness begins together. Let's celebrate our positive progress and keep this momentum going as we embark on a new school year!

Girls Prep Science Spotlight [7/25/2016]

Good Afternoon Girls Prep Families-

We want to take this opportunity to thank you for entrusting your daughter's education to us. Girls Prep is committed to partnering with our families to provide them with resources to support their daughter's growth, especially during the summer months. Each week, we will be sharing with you helpful tips, resources, and links to ensure our students are having a great summer!

This week, we will be focusing our attention on science. Here at Girls Prep, we want to ensure our girls have access to a wide variety of science-related opportunities in school and through extracurricular activities. Did you know that all of our girls receive Science instruction from a dedicated science teacher every day? Did you also know that women make up about 47% of the total U.S. workforce, but are much less represented in science and engineering occupations? We at Girls Prep are trying to address this national concern by teaching our girls critical science skills and knowledge that they will need to compete with their counterparts in this field.

Here are some of the things that make our science program at Girls Prep special:

  • We have dedicated science teachers for all grades.

  • Scholars are provided with science each and every day.

  • We currently have two science labs within the school.

  • We also have partnerships with community organizations such as the Bubble Foundation and Leave It Better, which teaches our girls how to apply science to every-day living.

Did you know...

Girl’s who graduate from single-sex schools are 6 times more likely to consider majoring in math, science, and technology compared to girls who attend co-ed schools.

Girls Prep was founded on the simple idea that every parent, regardless of race, income level or zip code, should have the power to choose a great public school for their daughter. As we embark upon the 2016-17 school year, please take a moment to watch the below 'Welcome to Girls Prep' video that showcases our principals, scholars, parents and alumnae in their own voice.
