Welcome From Our Principal

Patricia Jahaly
Principal
Girls Prep Lower East Side Elementary School

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Welcome to Girls Prep!  I am thrilled to lead the flagship (K-4) campus of NYC's first all-girls, tuition free, public charter school in the vibrant and diverse Lower East Side community.  I am also excited to lead alongside Lacy Reed, Principal of Girls Prep Lower East Side Middle School. At Girls Prep, we know the impact of educating girls in our society and the positive effect they will have on the international community. Please watch our welcome video below:

It is this commitment to educating the young women of our city that continues our work.  This year we are celebrating 11 years of providing a unique and exciting educational option to our students and their families. Our first cohort of graduated students will be applying to college. Our dream to not only get students in high quality right fit colleges is becoming realized and will be fulfilled once these young women graduate. Girls Prep has become one of the premier feeder schools to leadership development programs that place scholars in outstanding private high schools. These programs include Prep for Prep, TEAK, Breakthrough, Oliver Scholars and A Better Chance. Moreover, 2016 also marks the fourth consecutive year in which 100% of the Girls Prep 8th grade graduating scholars were accepted into high-quality, "right-fit" college-prep high schools that will ensure the scholars remain on a path to college completion. Girls Prep alumnae now attend 33 of the top nationally ranked public high schools in NYC (by US News & World Report) and a range of top parochial, private and public high schools, including Philips Exeter Academy, Bard Early College High School, Manhattan/Hunter Science School and Sacred Heart Academy.

Our mission at Girls Prep, is that all of our students graduate from college.  In order to make college knowledge, a key component of our North Star path to college completion, we embark on a diversity of activities in order to support this mission.  Beginning in Kindergarten our students visit a college campus each year, so that by the time they graduate from 8th grade they will have been exposed to a diversity of options.

As you walk into our building you will be introduced to our warm and joyful school culture built on the notion that all girls can achieve.  Our classrooms are named after influential women, like Brenda Berkman, Mae Jemison and Oprah Winfrey, so that our students learn early on that the future is full of opportunities for those who work hard.

At Girls Prep our dynamic curriculum is centered around our core values of scholarship, merit, sisterhood, and responsibility. We are committed to providing a rigorous education that not only focuses on the subject areas of reading, writing, math, science and social studies, but also emphasizes social-emotional learning, the arts, and physical activity.  Our program includes:

  • Dedicated math and ELA teachers in the upper grades

  • Daily Science classes taught by dedicated Science teachers

  • Daily small groups in all grades to support our diversity of learners

  • On-site after-school program through our partnership with Road to Success

  • Partnership with Go Project to support our students throughout the year and over the summer

  • Choir  and Art Speciality courses

  • Tennis Clinic and Team

  • Chess Team

Families are essential partners in this work, and we provide numerous opportunities for families to be actively involved in their children’s education.  Beginning with home visits in August and continuing throughout the year with monthly classroom family events, Unity Meetings, parent information workshops and field trips, Girls Prep values our collaborative relationship with families.

Girls Prep Lower East Side Elementary School is part of the Public Prep Network, a nonprofit organization that develops single-sex elementary and middle public schools that pursue excellence through continuous learning and data-driven instruction. Our model is designed to empower each student to build strong character, demonstrate critical thinking, possess a core body of knowledge, and be on a predictive path to earn a degree from a four-year university.

I invite you to explore our website and contact us to learn more about our school community.
