Academics

Girls Prep Lower East Side Elementary School serves New York City, including Brooklyn and the entire Lower East Side. We give our students the foundation they need to continue on the path to college success. While the goal of the typical elementary school is to prepare well-rounded and literate scholars, we also strive to grow empowered, thoughtful and active professionals.

We help our students develop character traits that are essential to ethical success. Through the opportunities to explore the world around them, students gain skills in collaboration, technology and writing. We think about our core values — responsibility, merit, scholarship and sisterhood — in everything we do.

One of our main goals is helping our students look past gender stereotypes. By looking past these, they have the opportunity to develop positive and accurate self-expectations and expectations they hold of others.

Curriculum

Girls Prep Lower East Side Elementary School employs a rigorous curriculum that addresses the Common Core State Standards. Our program is flexible to meet the needs of learners at all levels.

One main goal of our curriculum is to help students connect with the economical, social and political changes happening around them. We help them identify not only how these changes affect them, but also how they can affect change with their own actions.

We offer field trips that we align with our educational programming. We choose cities and sites that highlight arts, culture and history. Students also have the opportunity to see college campuses.

For the 2014-2015 year, our academic goals include:

  1. 1.     curriculum development and implementation
  2. 2.     writing
  3. 3.     complex problem-solving

Data and Assessment

Like a public elementary school, we assess how are students are learning throughout the year. We use the data we gain from these assessments to make decisions regarding our programming and instructional methods.

Professional Development

Our teachers continue to meet the changing needs of today’s students by participating in professional development opportunities. They learn new, effective ways to engage students, present programming material and encourage the development of essential life skills.

Technology Integration

Technology is at the heart of what we do. We ensure our curriculum takes full advantage of technology. Our students have the skills they need to succeed in today’s modern world. This includes finding reliable information, collaborating with others and communicating ideas.
