STEM

Girls Prep Lower East Side is committed to developing the next generation of female and minority engineers, scientists and mathematicians. Driven by the philosophy to "start early with the end in mind," Girls Prep has implemented a replicable model of science and math education in the early grades, with great impact. For example, for three consecutive years, these model practices have propelled 97% or more Girls Prep fourth grade scholars to pass the NY State Science exam, placing the all-girls school in the top ten percent of all NYC Public Schools.

Girls Prep is unique in that each scholar, starting from Kindergarten, receives science instruction five days a week from science-only faculty members exclusively focused on teaching the wonders of science.

Moreover, Girls Prep is one of the only public elementary schools in New York to have Cognitively Guided Instruction (CGI) in math starting from Kindergarten and departmentalized math-only teachers, starting from third grade. During CGI, students dissect and solve one complex problem each day for 45 minutes in small groups, and present their thinking to the entire class. This innovative approach enables a high-level of student discourse about mathematics beginning in Kindergarten. Girls Prep is an exemplar of the National Council of Teaching Mathematics, which recommended in 2010 the use of Elementary Mathematics Specialists in Pre-K–6 environments to enhance the teaching, learning, and assessing of mathematics to improve student achievement.

By establishing in elementary school a strong foundation in math and science, Girls Prep helps instill an early love of inquiry, critical thinking and problem solving, which will in turn ignite a curiosity and pursuit of STEM-related careers by young women, which is ultimately what's needed to bridge the gender and race gap in STEM fields.

Girls Prep Featured on WABC's Here and Now

Ian Rowe, CEO of Public Prep, and Kaitlyn Hendricks, a fourth grader at Girls Prep Lower East Side, were featured on WABC’s Here and Now, a weekly one hour program that's dedicated to covering the issues and interests of the African-American community in the New York tri-state area. The June 7th episode focused on STEM efforts across our network, highlighting our efforts to develop the next generation of minority females in the STEM fields.
