Character Development

Girls Prep Lower East Side Elementary School develops students’ character through our Core Values of scholarship, merit, sisterhood, and responsibility. We also help students develop non-cognitive strengths such as resilience, determination, self-control, perseverance, gratitude, empathy, and optimism. We encourage our teachers and families to share resources from our Character Media Library with students. Click here to explore our Character Media Library.

We celebrate students' character development and demonstration of our Core Values at our Unity Meetings, which are school-wide celebrations focused around each of our core values. Our Unity Meetings always end with the Girls Prep Cheer.

In addition, our scholars engage in community service, which instills civic duty in our students and helps them to learn that their actions make a difference.

Finally, we expose our students to exceptional role models who have overcome adversity in order to make a positive impact on the world. Role models include students from high-performing high-schools in NYC and our classroom Namesakes, the influential women for whom our classrooms are named. Click here to learn more about our Namesakes.

Watch our students' application of their character development in this video that the 2013 Zaha Hadid class put together on sisterhood for the Unity Meeting that they led.
