Raising Resilient Boys
Part of Public Prep's Series of Community Conversations
Bronx, NY (May 11th, 2018): At Public Prep Network we are committed to changing the narrative for our scholars, and we invite parents, faculty, and community members on this journey because we believe that it will lead to the best outcomes for our scholars. As part of our efforts, we are hosting a series of Community Conversations to engage elected officials and relevant community leaders to promote charter schools as a trusted vehicle to expand educational opportunity for children and strengthen relations with local neighborhoods.
Boys Prep Bronx and Public Prep Network hosted the first iteration of a series of Community Conversations –the inaugural topic being “Raising Resilient Boys.” Our Guest speakers included, Assemblyman Marcos Crespo, Mr. Richard Wayner, a Bronx native and former Goldman Sachs M&A banker, entrepreneur and CEO of two minority-owned firms, and Public Prep CEO, Ian Rowe. Additionally our audience included community members and parents of Boys Prep Bronx, faculty, and representatives from our partner organization, The Parent-Child Home Program.
Our special guests Mr. Crespo and Mr. Wayner shared their individual stories about growing up in the Bronx and maneuvering through influences, both positive and negative, to get to where they are today –Mr. Crespo a trailblazing Assemblymember of District 85, and Mr. Rayner an entrepreneur and CEO at his own firms in New York.
We look forward to hosting more Community Conversations and to engaging with the communities that we serve.
Across the country, more than 2.6 million young men of color are in college today. Yet the dominant narrative ignores that reality. It is important to develop practical strategies for how we can ensure the next generation of young men of color are on a path to college completion and life success.
